Joel B. Braunstein, MD, MBA

Dr. Braunstein is a board-certified internist and cardiologist and the Founding CEO and President of Centegen, Inc, a private biotechnology company developing novel therapeutics to fight serious drug-resistant bacterial infections. He is also co-Founder and President of LifeTech Research, Inc, a leading life sciences research firm providing investment due-diligence, licensing and acquisition advisory and business development services primarily for large private and public equity investment firms.
Dr. Braunstein has strongly recognized expertise in the fields of health care management and finance; FDA and CMS (Medicare) regulatory policy; and the ethical conduct and methodological design of clinical trials. He was the principal architect of a large survey study that examined major factors affecting patients' decisions to participate in clinical trials. He has also provided expert consultative services to the Coverage Policy Group of CMS, and assisted with the development of a number of demonstration projects incorporated into the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003.
Dr. Braunstein has authored more than 80 manuscripts for peer-reviewed literature and the popular press. He has also served as an editor and peer-reviewer for numerous prominent medical journals. Dr. Braunstein received his MD in 1996 from Northwestern University Medical School, where he graduated with top distinction and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Society. Subsequently, he carried out his postdoctoral residency training in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and his cardiovascular medicine fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. During his tenure at Johns Hopkins, he was also awarded a two-year term as a Robert Wood Johnson National Clinical Scholar, obtained an MBA with health services management focus, and maintained an Assistant Professor faculty position within the School of Medicine. Currently, Dr. Braunstein maintains an Adjunct Assistant Professorship position at the Yale Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) and the Yale School of Medicine.
